The Knowing/Doing Gap
Thinking into Results Lesson 2 The Knowing/Doing Gap
Hey Gorgeous,
“Education does not mean teaching people what they do not know. It means teaching them to behave as they do not behave.” J. Ruskin. Truer words were never spoken in understanding the Knowing/Doing Gap,
Have you ever wondered why you do things that you know aren’t good for you, like eating that piece of cake when you want to release weight? Or, why you don’t do the things that you that you know will get you the results that you want? Like exercising when you want to get fit?
What New Year resolution did you make that you’re no longer doing?
Did you buy a new gym membership & aren’t using it like you intended? Perhaps you started saving up for something you want & then spent the money on something else. Or maybe you’re not doing the work you need to do to get the results you want. You know how to get more sales & yet don’t pick up the phone to make the calls. This is the knowing/doing gap.
So many of us are doing things we don’t want to do & getting results we don’t want & yet we continue to do them, or not doing the things we know will give us the results we do want.
Lesson 2 is all about why we do what we do when we know what we know! What is going on in our minds, the conscious & the subconscious, or those pesky Paradigms!
We all know that the definition of insanity is doing the same things & expecting different results, yet we still live in hope. Insane hope that something will miraculously change!
We live in a world of information & are constantly learning yet this doesn’t necessarily mean that we put into practice what we know! There are people all over the world, & you could well be one of them, who have lots of training & yet they’re still not as successful as you might expect. With all the training (a billion $$$ business around the world) we should all be at the top of our game & yet so many of us aren’t putting our knowledge into action. Why is that?
Basically it’s because our paradigms, a collection of beliefs & habits, are the programming running our minds. Much like software on your computer, I think of the conscious mind as the software & the subconscious mind as the hardware. How often does your computer do something you weren’t expecting? Frequently in my world! That’s because the hardware is over-riding the software. What happens when you download a new programme without uninstalling the old one? Generally chaos, or it certainly doesn’t work the way we expect it to.
When you make a decision, to go to the gym, release weight, save money etc, you make it in the conscious mind – download new software. Initially it works, you start going to the gym, or stop eating cake & you’re motivated & excited by the potential results. And then, something gets in the way, you work late, something happens to a family member which takes up your time or you get sick & you stop. You fully intend to start again, & may well do so, only to have something else come up to stop you. This is because of the paradigm – hardware, which is creating a different result. This lesson is very powerful because you learn how to close the knowing/doing gap & how those pesky paradigms are causing the problem.
Once we become aware of the things we are doing that we need to stop, or the things we’re not doing that we need to start, we can start to reprogramme our minds to take different action so we can get different results. Next week we’ll take a look at Lesson 3 where we explore paradigms in more detail.
What is your biggest knowing/doing gap? Comment below & let’s see what the most common ones are 🙂
